Biennale du Design 2004 St. Etienne

Saint-Etienne lives and breathes Design.

Overflowing with industrial expertise and irrepressible creativity, Saint-Etienne has been synonymous with French art and industry for over one hundred years. Flowering from this deep-rooted identity blooms an ambition for the future. If truth were told, this link between creativity and industry has transformed Saint-Etienne into a cradle of design.Design features in all major projects in our town and also forms the focus of a major event: the International Design Biennial, taking place for the 4th time from 6 to 14 November 2004.Saint-Etienne and its suburbs today represent a real design hub which has evolved straight out of the International Design Biennial.

And soon this will be consolidated by the creation of the future City of Design that will bring together all the players from across the sector, from training and research through to industrial design. The Biennial also allows us to appreciate the wide diversity of approaches to design, with a huge number of designers who come in from over 80 countries to display in their work their vision of the civilisation we inhabit.Become a witness to this synthesis of art and industry, the metamorphosis of a land that struggles to safeguard its history, identity and future, and become a protagonist of Saint-Etienne’s revival by acting to embrace the design concept yourself.Michel ThiollièreMayor of Saint-EtiennePresident of Saint-Etienne MétropoleSenator of the Loire
